Mother And Bebe has taken a different turn and is now exclusively owned and operated by one SAHM mama.  At the end of last year our shop grew smaller and although I am sad to end a relationship with a wonderful business partner, I am excited to start a new chapter on the journey M&B is taking.  We are smaller and more intimate now but look forward to servicing our customers with lots of personal touch.  We are still located in Atlanta, GA USA and all of our products are hand-made in the US by me!

Our International flair has gone but the inspiration that is left behind is warm, fresh and still resonates within me.  Thank you, Andrea, for all of your passion, ideas and resources.  I enjoyed working and learning beside you and wish you all the best.

Hace unos días hicimos nuestro primer Mei Tai Media Hebilla de lujo!


Este portabebé se hizo por encargo para una mamá en Argentina que eligió una preciosa seda comprada por Kate hace un tiempo.
Primero me sentí un poco ansiosa porque nunca había trabajado con este tipo de tela, y había escuchado varios comentarios sobre lo difícil que era! Pero como me encantan y estimulan los desafíos acepté gustosa y al final todos quedamos satisfechos con el resultado:

A few days ago we completed our first Mei Tai Deluxe Half Buckle!


This carrier is made to order for a mother in Argentina who chose a beautiful silk fabric purchased by Kate a while ago.
At first I felt a little anxious because I had never worked with this type of material. I had heard several comments about how difficult it was to work with silk. But I love a challenge and willingly accepted it! The end result turned out to be beautiful and our customer was very satisfied. Above is a snapshot of our silk mei tai.


The mother that purchased our silk custom order loved it! She is an experienced baby wearer and uses baby carriers daily with her young son. In addition to a custom mei tai, she decided to commission me for a ring sling in natural moss green linen. It is a size XL, is reversible and includes a handy pocket!

Some time ago Mother and Baby began making baby carriers combining the oriental style of the mei tais with ergonomic backpacks.  In our opinion this was the perfect combination providing greater ease of use and total comfort.

So far these are baby carriers are only available in Argentina but hopefully they will soon be in the United States.  Surely they may become as popular as our original mei tais.

Our model includes all of the same features of our mei tais, but the waist includes a buckle instead of a strap for tying.

Hasta el momento estos porta-bebés están en Argentina pero pronto estarán en Estados Unidos también y seguramente más adelante los haremos a pedido y gusto del cliente como los Mei Tais.

Ring Slings are a popular carrier in the baby wearing world. Despite the recent recall of the Infantino Ring Sling and lots of buzz about this type of carrier, Mother and Bebe is moving forward to creating their very own sling. With proper instruction and careful use, ring sling and pouch style carriers are very safe, easy to use, comfortable for both baby and mom and best of all...fashionable! Our new product will be out on the market soon in a tester format as we navigate the creation of a signature design.


Here's the skinny on our process so far...
Andrea and Kate decided to make a ring sling because it was so easy to make ourselves. Andrea began to play around with her new sewing machine and discovered that she could easily sew a ring sling. We decided not to pay a seamstress to put it together for us and Andrea has been working hard to perfect her sewing skills.


Initially, Andrea researched a few slings and looked at how the shoulder was sewn. Each vendor uses their own design in hopes of marketing the most comfortable and unique shoulder pattern. In the meantime, Kate sent a few of the more popular brands of sling to Andrea for disection and examination. We also placed an order from slingrings.com for some aluminum rings to try. Soon, Andrea came up with her own style of shoulder! She has gone on to craft 12 ring slings in her own design.


At this junction, Kate decided to research the shoulder design in more depth. We are currently reading up on the different types of shoulder, how they fit and ensuring that our creation does not accidentally duplicate another vendor's style.  Additionally, we are working on wearing instructions to accompany our slings.

Las bandoleras de anillas o “Ring Slings” son porta bebés muy populares en el mundo de la Crianza en Brazos o “Babywearing”. A pesar de la reciente retirada del mercado de los Infantino Ring Sling y un montón de rumores acerca de este tipo de porta bebés, Mother and Bebe esta fabricandolos. Con la instrucción adecuada y el buen uso, este estilo de porta bebés es muy seguro, fácil de usar, cómodo para el bebé y la mamá y lo mejor de todo... Preciosos! Por el momento los estamos vendiendo como “probadores” hasta que terminemos de crear nuestro modelo definitivo.

Aquí les contamos como fue nuestro proceso hasta el momento ...
Andrea y Kate decidieron hacer Ring Slings y comenzaron (meses atrás) a jugar con sus máquinas de coser probando nuevas telas y modelos. Hemos decidido no pagar a una costurera y hacerlos nosotras mismas, hemos estado trabajando duro perfeccionando nuestras habilidades de costura.

Inicialmente, Andrea investigó varios Ring Slings estudiando sobre todo los diferentes tipos de hombros. Cada Marca utiliza su propio diseño, con la esperanza de comercializar el modelo de hombro más cómodo y único. Mientras tanto, Kate envió algunas de las marcas más populares a Andrea para su examen. También hizo un pedido de anillos de aluminio para probar. Pronto, Andrea logró su propio estilo de hombro! Ella ha hecho 12 Ring Slings en su propio diseño.

Kate también decidió investigar por su lado el diseño del hombro en más profundidad. 
En estos momentos estamos leyendo sobre los diferentes tipos de hombro y queremos asegurarnos que nuestra creación no duplique el estilo de otro proveedor. Además, estamos trabajando en las Instrucciones de Uso para entregar con nuestros productos.

Kate y yo estamos preparando una próxima ronda de Mei Tais, para ello trabajamos en los cambios de nuestro modelo “ANKA”, guiándonos  por los elogios y críticas de clientes, amigos y nuestra propia experiencia.

Un cambio fundamental va a ser el relleno de la cintura, ya que si bien sirve muy bien para niños grandes, a varias clientas les pareció excesivamente duro y esto fue un punto en contra.

Otro cambio va a ser el hilo, esta vez utilizaremos hilo extremadamente fuerte (los que se usan para coser cuero, mochilas, etc.) Queremos asegurarnos de que nuestros MT sean fuertes como rocas!

En estos momentos estamos comprando telas, eligiendo nuevos tonos, combinaciones y estampados! Esa parte del diseño la disfrutamos muchísimo! Quieren ver un adelanto?

Kate and I are preparing the next round of Mei Tais!  We are working to implement changes to our design, "ANKA", guided by the praise and criticism from clients, friends and our own experience.


One fundamental change will include the padding at the waist.  Our previous padding was very thick and stiff which works well for older, bigger kids but feedback helped us determine it was too stiff.  We decided this needed to change so we are now using 1/2" thick neoprene.  Neoprene is very soft and pliable yet supportive and firm.  
Another change will be the thread used to sew our mei tais.  We are choosing 100% polyester threads that are extremely strong (used for sewing leather, bags, etc).  This will ensure that our mei tais are as strong as a rock!


We are currently buying fabric, choosing new colors, creating combinations and patterns!  That part of the business is a joy for us!  Want to see a preview?

The year was 1979, and in Colombia, Dr. Sanabria tried to improve the health system at the maternity hospital where she worked. The conditions for premature infants was very bad. There were not enough incubators for the number of children being born. Due to overcrowding, the babies had to be moved around a lot, exposure increased the number of babies contracting diseases and passing it from one to the other. The hospital found it hard to buy formula, resources were scarce ... and that's how Dr. Sanabria trusted her instincts and opted to return to nature. Why would technology beat nature?

She devised a new method, in which mothers would be the natural incubators of premature babies. What could be better then maternal warmth and heat? The babies started life in a similar environment than what they experienced in the womb. Sheltered, and close, listening a heartbeat, knowing the smell of it's mother, recognizing her voice and absorbing her warmth... her love...her kisses.

Kangaroo mothers have their babies attached to them as much time as possible. They may even share the role with the father. Joeys are placed vertically in a 'frog' position lying on the breast of the mother and in direct contact with the skin as she sits in a comfortable chair-like position with feet slightly elevated. The baby is placed between the breasts of the mother, his cheek on her chest and legs under her breasts. The baby's head is slightly extended, which keeps the airway open and facilitates mother-baby eye contact.

This new Kangaroo method helped those premature infants in miraculous ways! They were glued to their mothers thus gaining twice as much weight and experiencing less respiratory problems than those who remained in incubators. The length of stay of newborns in the hospital was halved and the number of serious infections was reduced dramatically. Exclusive breastfeeding greatly favored improved heart rate of infants who in turn gained weight more quickly and easily.
Today the Kangaroo method is used in countless maternity wards around the world, benefiting thousands of mothers and babies and allowing them to enjoy a very close bond following birth. They feel security, contentment, closeness and love.

Corría el año 1979 y, en Colombia, el Dr. Sanabria intentaba mejorar el sistema de salud del Hospital Maternal donde trabajaba, las condiciones para los recién nacidos prematuros era muy mala, no había incubadoras suficientes para la cantidad de niños que nacía, entonces debían colocar a más de uno en ellas, esto hacía que muchos bebes contrajeran la enfermedad del otro. Al hospital se le dificultaba la compra de leche artificial, los recursos eran escasos… y fue así que el Dr. Sanabria confió en su instinto y apostó en volver a los orígenes,  por qué la tecnología le ganaría a la naturaleza?

Ideó un nuevo método, en el cual las madres serían las incubadoras naturales de sus bebes prematuros. Qué mejor calor que el calor materno? En vez de arrancar al bebé del lugar que lo cobijó durante su gestación, seguiría en él, fuera pero pegado a él. Escuchando el mismo latido de corazón, conociendo el olor de su mamá, reconociendo su voz y recibiendo su calor, su amor y sus besos.

Las Madres Canguro tienen a sus bebes pegadas a ellas la mayor cantidad de tiempo posible, pueden, incluso, intercambiar el rol de canguro con el padre. Los bebes se colocan de forma vertical en posición “ranita” recostados sobre el pecho de la mamá y en contacto directo con la piel, estando ella en un asiento confortable y con los pies levemente elevados. El bebé se sitúa entre los senos de la madre, la mejilla sobre el pecho y las piernas bajo sus senos; la cabeza del bebé queda ligeramente extendida, lo que permite mantener abiertas las vías respiratorias y facilita el contacto visual madre-hijo.

Este nuevo Método Canguro ayudó a que esos bebés prematuros que permanecían pegados a sus mamás ganaran el doble de peso y tuviesen menos problemas respiratorios que los que permanecían en incubadoras. El tiempo de permanencia de los recién nacidos en el hospital disminuyó a la mitad y el número de infecciones graves se redujo drásticamente. La lactancia exclusiva se vió sumamente favorecida,  mejoró el ritmo cardíaco de los bebés que a su vez ganaron peso con mayor facilidad y rapidez.

Hoy en día el Método Canguro se utiliza en innumerables Maternidades alrededor del Mundo, beneficiando a miles de madres y bebés que disfrutan de un vínculo sumamente estrecho a partir del nacimiento, sintiendo seguridad, contención, cercanía y AMOR.

Until now, Kate was always the one who posted on this blog. Now, I will be helping her by adding ideas, point of views or simply commenting about interesting things from the Babywearing world.

Let me introduce myself: My name is Andrea, I live in Buenos Aires and I’m the mother of 2 wonderful kinds ages 3 and 12 years. As you can imagine I have to deal with very diverse things given their age difference.

When my youngest child was still a baby, I met Kate who was here in Buenos Aires. It was a wonderful Sunday when her family and mine were walking together in Tigre, a beautiful place by the river. Her baby was not confortable on the stroller anymore, and he was crying… suddenly Kate took “a roll of cloth” (as I saw it then), tied it on her waist and quickly, with great ability, put her baby on her back. The baby just stopped crying and they both seemed really confortable and ready to walk again. I was AMAZED and INTRIGUED. I started asking questions – by using my husband as translator. I wanted to know what that was all about. Kate made me wear it, and I just loved it. That was my first experience in the Babywearing world. Thanks Kate!

As mentioned in the first post of this blog, I asked Kate to help me create a Mei Tai for me – since it was almost impossible to get one down here at that time. She loved the idea and with the generosity that characterizes her, helped me a lot. Of course we managed to make more than one. ;-p.

The funniest thing was that neither my English nor her Spanish were good enough as to have a fluent conversation. However we were connected by our maternity and by the passion for Babywearing! We did it by using signs, phrases without the right verbal tenses and of course good dictionaries. We have done a great job overcoming the language barrier. In watching our 2 boys that are almost the same age (only a month and days difference), who managed to play together and communicate without words in much the same way as us.

We have proven to ourselves that everything is possible. That is how Mother And Bebe was born, a multi-cultural society that makes products “from our hearts, to yours”.

Hasta ahora siempre fue Kate la que se ocupó de escribir en nuestro Blog, a partir de hoy compartiremos la responsabilidad de su mantenimiento. Por mi parte, aportando puntos de vista, ideas, curiosidades que leo en la Web y demás.

¿Les cuento un poco sobre mi?
Mi nombre es Andrea y tengo dos hermosos hijos, de 12 y 3 años, es decir que nuestra familia vive experiencias y etapas muy diversas por cuestiones de edad!

Cuando mi niño mas pequeño era bebé conocí a Kate que estaba de viaje por Argentina, y en ese instante, y gracias a ella, quedé completamente enamorada de su “mei tai”.
Fue un domingo que paseábamos por Tigre cuando de pronto su pequeño comenzó a estar  fastidioso del cochecito y entonces allí Kate saco una misteriosa “tela enrollada” que yo mire asombrada… Qué haría con eso? Al ratito vi como con mucha rapidez y soltura desenrollo aquello, se lo puso a la cintura, y puso su niño a la espalda!
Instantáneamente su bebe dejo de llorar y comenzó a reír. Obviamente mi intriga era muy grande y empecé, a través de mi marido como traductor oficial, a preguntarle qué era aquello, estaba fascinada; ella se lo sacó e hizo que yo misma lo probara… y esa fue mi primera experiencia en el mundo de la Crianza en Brazos! Gracias Kate!

A partir de allí, y como bien contó Kate en la primer entrada de este blog, nos pusimos en campaña para fabricar mi propio Mei Tai, dado que acá en Argentina prácticamente no se conocen y al menos en ese momento era imposible conseguir uno. A ella le encantó la idea y con la generosidad que la caracteriza me ayudo encantada. Por supuesto aprovechamos para hacer más de uno. ;-p

Lo más gracioso fue que ambas hablamos diferentes idiomas! Sin embargo nos unía la maternidad y nuestro amor por el Babywearing o Crianza en Brazos y gracias a ello superamos las barreras del idioma.
Ambas tenemos hijos de la misma edad, se llevan un poco mas de un mes, y así como se comunicaban ellos sin hablar, casi lo mismo hicimos nosotras ayudándonos de señas, frases sin tiempos verbales y por supuesto los fantásticos diccionarios!

Con eso probamos que el ser humano cuando quiere algo, lo logra! Y así nació poquito a poco Mother and Bebe, una sociedad multi-cultural que hace productos que salen de nuestro corazón y van al tuyo!

What is a 'Tester'? ¿Qué es un Probador?

Well, we have been live on the internet for about 2 weeks now. Some people have found us and we have sold approximately 7 testers to the baby wearing community. Several people have asked us what does a 'Tester' mean? So, I decided we could clarify a little bit.

We really are new to all of this so I am not 100% sure what a 'Tester' might mean completely. But...our idea is that a 'Tester' is a carrier that we have designed and created yet it needs to go public so people can give us feedback about what they think of our design and features. We are selling our 'Testers' for half price to experienced babywearers so they can provide solid reviews of how our product works and if they feel our design is good.

When someone purchases our 'Tester', they receive a questionnaire asking various questions about their experience with our product. This gives us an idea of features we might consider changing to enhance our product. We also will probably follow up with email and remain in touch with our buyers to get even more feedback.

Bueno, hemos estado en línea en Internet por cerca de 2 semanas. Algunas personas nos han encontrado y hemos vendido alrededor de 7 probadores a la comunidad “Baby Wearing”. Varias personas nos han preguntado ¿Qué significa un "probador"? Por lo tanto, decidí que debía aclarar un poco.

Realmente somos nuevos en todo esto, así que no estoy 100% segura de lo que un "probador" puede significar completamente. Pero... nuestra idea es que un "probador" es un nuevo porta bebé que hemos diseñado y creado, sin embargo, necesitamos hacerlo público para que la gente pueda darnos su opinión sobre lo que piensan de nuestro diseño y características. Estamos vendiendo nuestros "probadores" a mitad de precio a “babywearers” experimentados para que puedan ofrecer buenas críticas de cómo funciona nuestro producto y si sienten que nuestro diseño es bueno.

The Woes Of Shipping / Problemas de Envío

One of our major obstacles with Mother And Bebe became shipping. Since our products are hand-made in Argentina, we needed to figure out how we were going to ship them to the US.

Our original idea was to ship individually to each customer upon placement of an order. A local carrier in Argentina would pass along our package to USPS for delivery. This quickly changed when we tried sending 2 mei tais this way. Our package was virtually destroyed and one mei tai has yet to be seen. The other, was kindly re-packaged and addressed to it's destination along with the tattered original packaging. It took over a month to receive. Needless to say, this method would not work.

Our next idea was to ship via a reputable company in bulk to the US. From there, the product would be distributed individually when ordered. We were quite nervous this might prove to be expensive thus driving our prices up. Raciel wrangled a contact with DHL and they packaged up 12 mei tais to be shipped. The package arrived in 3 days, was very reasonably priced and all mei tais arrived! The only problem was that Customs must have decided they didn't trust their sniffing dogs or their scanning equipment so they sliced through the waist padding of one of the mei tais. We are working on a claim but otherwise, DHL was certainly the way to go!

After much discussion and tentativeness, we think we have finally landed onto a shipping method we can live with.

Uno de los principales obstáculos para Mother and Bebe fue el envío. Dado que nuestros productos están hechos a mano en Argentina, necesitábamos averiguar cómo nos lo iban a enviar a EE.UU.

Nuestra idea original era enviar de forma individual a cada cliente según su pedido. Usaríamos la compañía Correo Argentino para mandar nuestros paquetes. Esto cambió rápidamente cuando tratamos de enviar 2 Mei Tais de esta manera. Nuestro paquete fue prácticamente destruido y un Mei Tai aún no llegó. El otro, fue “amablemente” re-envasado y llegó a destino junto con el embalaje original completamente desgarrado. Se tardó más de un mes para llegar. No hace falta decir que este método no funcionaría.

Nuestra siguiente idea fue enviar, en grandes cantidades, a través de una empresa de renombre a los EE.UU. A partir de ahí, el producto sería distribuido de forma individual a cada cliente cuando fuesen comprados. Estábamos muy nerviosos ya que esto podía resultar caro y, por lo tanto, subir nuestros precios. Raciel encontró una empresa que trabaja con DHL y envió 12 Mei Tais de esta manera. El paquete llegó en 3 días, era un precio muy razonable y llegaron todos los Mei Tais! El único problema fue que la Aduana decidió cortar el relleno de la cintura de uno de los Mei Tais. DHL fue, sin duda, el camino a seguir!

Después de mucha búsqueda pensamos que por fin hemos encontrado el mejor método de envío que podemos utilizar.

Making Ring Slings / Haciendo Bandoleras de Anillas

Our mei tais seem to be humming along just great! The seamstress in Argentina has her own pattern and if we ever decide to take our business elsewhere, we could buy it from her. I am still working on a true pattern for us so this probably would not be an issue, ultimately. These things take time and gosh I seem to run out of time every day!

In the meantime, Andrea has purchased herself a whopper of a sewing machine! It is a Toyota brand and it comes with a ton of bells and whistles. I am so jealous because my old Singer is practically an antique. The Toyota does special embroidery stitches, button holes and much more!

Mark recently took a trip down to BA for almost 2 weeks. We took advantage of the trip to send samples of ring slings for Andrea to check out. I sent 2 Kalea brands and 1 Sleeping Baby brand along with a sample wrap of some very lovely linen fabric. We also purchased several rings to pass along to Andrea. She turned around and sewed 2 really nice looking ring slings immediately!

Andrea sent me pictures of the slings and I thought she had commissioned our seamstress to sew them. They looked so professional! Huge kudos to Andrea for putting them together with enbroidery, accenting fabric on the tail and everything. Mark brought them back for me to see and hopefully sell. We will see what the feedback is from the Koala Mommas.

Haciendo Bandoleras de Anillas (Ring Sling)

Nuestros Mei Tais parecen estar marchando a un ritmo simplemente genial! Nuestra costurera en Argentina tiene su propio patrón y si alguna vez decidimos llevar nuestro negocio a otros lugares, podríamos comprárselo a ella. Todavía estoy trabajando en un verdadero modelo para nosotros por lo que esto, en última instancia, no sería un problema. Estas cosas toman tiempo y ¡Dios! ¡Las horas del día parecen pocas!

Mientras tanto, ¡Andrea se ha comprado una máquina de coser! Es de marca Toyota y viene con un montón de puntadas y accesorios. Estoy tan celosa porque mi vieja Singer es prácticamente una antigüedad. La Toyota tiene puntos especiales de bordado, ojales en un solo paso y mucho más!

Mark hizo recientemente un viaje a Buenos Aires, durante casi 2 semanas. Aprovechamos el viaje para enviarle muestras de bandoleras de anillo (Ring Sling) a Andrea. He enviado 2 de marca Kalea y 1 de la marca Sleeping Baby junto con 1 fular de un lino muy bonito. También compramos varios anillos para enviarle a Andrea. Enseguida cosió 2 bandoleras de anillo muy bonitas!

Andrea me mandó fotos de las bandoleras y yo pensé que se las había encargado a nuestra costurera para coser. Se veían tan profesional! Se merece grandes elogios por haberle agregado bordados, telas decorativas en la cola y demás. Mark los trajo consigo cuando regresó a casa, así yo podía verlos y vender con optimismo. ¡Ya veremos cuál es la opinión de las Madres Koala!

Finding a Seamstress / Encontrando Costurera

It isn't easy finding someone to help you create a new product from scratch. Especially a product that is not mainstream! Baby carriers are a niche and not everyone is aware of the many options available.

Behind every good product is a good seamstress and a master mind to pull all the strings to put the product together. Andrea worked very hard to find a seamstress that was willing and able to create a product that we envisioned. She went through a few seamstresses before she finally settled on one that seemed competent and was willing to meet our demands.

The road has been a little bumpy at times but after much practice, trial and error, things have smoothed out. Our seamstress has done a wonderful job for Mother And Bebe and continues to produce wonderful work for us!

Thanks to Andrea, we would not be where we are today.

No es fácil encontrar a alguien para que te ayude a crear un nuevo producto a partir de cero. ¡Especialmente un producto que no es común y corriente! No todo el mundo es consciente de las muchas opciones disponibles que hay en temas de porta-bebés.

Detrás de cada buen producto hay una buena costurera y una mente maestra para tirar todas las cadenas para lograr lo que se pretende. Andrea ha trabajado muy duro para encontrar una costurera que fuese capaz y que estuviese dispuesta a crear un producto que sólo estaba en nuestra mente. Pasó por varias costureras antes de encontrar una que nos pareció lo suficientemente competente como para satisfacer nuestras demandas.

El camino ha sido un poco agitado a veces, pero después de mucha práctica, ensayo y error, las cosas se han suavizado. Nuestra costurera ha hecho un trabajo maravilloso para Mother and Bebe y continúa produciendo trabajos magníficos para nosotros!

All about the Koala Mommas / Todo sobre las Mamas Koala

ENGLISH:

The Koala Mommas was begun by a mom in Atlanta, GA who wanted to share babywearing with others. Her vision was to host a meeting where people could come to try on different carriers and learn about how to wear their babies as well as the benefits babywearing provides. The group grew quickly and 3 meetings were held per month in various locations of Atlanta.

When Kate's first child was born, she found the Koala Mommas and began attending meetings in Decatur each month. A lot was to be learned and she absorbed the information quickly. Soon, she was helping at the meetings and this year, she took over as one of the co-leaders with the group.

Taking over was not easy. Kate and her co-leader decided having meetings on Saturday mornings was logistically the best for them both. They each had 2 or 3 year olds so needed help with care for them during meetings. Historically, the Decatur Koala Momma meetings were held on Friday mornings. They were also held at a business establishment somewhere in Decatur. Throughout the course of time, the relationship between the Koala Mommas and the businesses' ended and a new location had to be found.

Armed with this information, Kate set out to find a community based location where meetings would not interrupt the flow of a thriving business and children could be more free during meetings. Hopefully, meetings in a setting like this would foster attendance and continue to thrive as a community based program that was free to the public.

Proposals were submitted to the Decatur Rec Center and The Solarium. Kate also investigated the Decatur library as well as a few local churches and some other local businesses. With a little luck, The Solarium approved their proposal! The building is one of a clump of buildings originally built and used as the Scottish Rite Children's Hospital. The Solarium is a special place and the hospital was the first in the US devoted to the orthopedic care of children. The Solarium was equipt with a Southern exposure and solid windows to allow natural light for helping to heal the children. In the 1970's the community center worked to renovate it and it now is used to host wedding receptions and community based programs. The setting is peaceful, quiet, expansive and a wonderful space!

The Koala Mommas are very proud to host their meetings on the fist Saturday of every month in Decatur at The Solarium. Meetings are held from 10-12 and are free to the public. No membership is required and Kate is a co-leader who helps others learn the art of babywearing.

Las Madres Koala fue iniciada por una madre en Atlanta, GA, que quiso compartir con los demás el “babywearing” o la práctica de llevar a sus bebés cargados. Su visión era organizar una reunión donde la gente pudiera venir a aprender acerca de los diferentes porta bebés, informarse sobre la manera de usarlos, así como los beneficios que proporciona el “babywearing”. El grupo creció rápidamente y se llevaron a cabo 3 reuniones por mes en distintos lugares de Atlanta.

Cuando el primer hijo de Kate nació, ella se encontró con el “koala mommas” y comenzó a asistir a reuniones en Decatur cada mes. Mucho fue lo que le enseñaron y ella absorbió la información rápidamente. Pronto, ella estaba ayudando en las reuniones y este año, se hizo cargo como uno de los co-líderes del grupo.

Encargarse no fue fácil. Kate y su co-líder decidieron organizar reuniones los sábados por las mañanas, era logísticamente mejor para las dos. Ellas tenían hijos de 2 y 3 años así que necesitaban ayuda con el cuidado de sus niños durante las reuniones. Históricamente, las reuniones “Decatur Koala Momma” se celebraban el viernes por la mañana. Ellas se llevaron a cabo también en un establecimiento comercial en algún lugar de Decatur. A lo largo del tiempo, la relación entre las “Madres Koala” y las empresas terminó y un nuevo lugar había que encontrar.

Armada con esta información, Kate se propuso encontrar una comunidad, basándose en que la localización no interrumpiese el flujo de un próspero negocio y los niños pudiesen estar más libres durante las reuniones. Con suerte, las reuniones en un entorno como éste fomentarían la asistencia y continuarían creciendo como un programa de base comunitaria gratis para el público.

Las propuestas se presentaron al Decatur Rec Center y en The Solarium. Kate también investigó la biblioteca de Decatur, así como las iglesias y unas cuantas empresas locales. Con un poco de suerte, The Solarium aprobó su propuesta! El edificio es uno de un grupo de edificios que fueron construidos y utilizados como el Hospital del Rito Escocés para la Infancia. The Solarium es un lugar especial y el hospital fue el primero en los EE.UU. dedicado a la ortopedia de los niños. The Solarium fue construido con una orientación hacia el sur y grandes ventanas para permitir la entrada de luz natural para ayudar a sanar a los niños. En la década de 1970 el centro se renovó y ahora se utiliza para recepciones de boda y los programas de la comunidad. El ambiente es apacible, tranquilo, amplio y un espacio maravilloso!

Las Madres Koala están muy orgullosas de realizar sus reuniones todos los sábados de cada mes en Decatur en The Solarium. Las reuniones se celebran entre las 10 y las 12hs. y son gratis para el público. No se necesita ser miembro y Kate es una co-líder que ayuda a otros a aprender el arte del “babywearing”.

Been away a while... / Estando ausentes por un tiempo...

We have been busy working on our web site and getting testers organized as well as creating a pattern. We have not blogged in a while and need to get back to it! The business is very slowly coming together and we have high hopes for 2010. I think we will try to blog more often using shorter posts. Maybe that will inspire us to keep up the information flow more consistently.

Both Kate and Andrea now have sewing machines. We have been diligently working on projects using them. Andrea created several mini mei tais that can be used by a child. For example, her son could wear the mei tai to carry around a stuffed animal on his back for fun! Kate has been working on creating the pattern for the Mother And Bebe mei tai. This will make it easier for our seamstresses to remain consistent in their production. So far, Kate has sewn one real mei tai but the dimensions were slightly off so she has cut another pattern and hopes to crank out another one soon!

In other sewing news, Kate also purchased a hemming foot for her machine. It took lots of practice and several evenings of work to understand how to use it, but finally she has mastered it for the most part. She has since sewn 5 linen wraps, 2 of which were for a friend, of various lengths.

Hemos estado muy ocupados trabajando en nuestro Sitio Web y en nuestros probadores, así como en la creación de un patrón para nuestros Mei Tais. ¡No hemos bloggeado por un tiempo y sentimos la necesidad de volver! Tanto Kate como Andrea tienen ahora las máquinas de coser. Hemos estado trabajando diligentemente en los proyectos usándolas. Andrea ha creado varios mini Mei Tais que pueden ser utilizados por un niño. ¡Por ejemplo, su hijo juega con el mini mei tai llevando un animal de peluche a la espalda para su diversión! Kate ha estado trabajando en crear el patrón del Mei Tai de Mother and Bebe. Esto hará que sea más fácil para nuestras costureras mantener la coherencia en su producción. Hasta el momento, Kate ha cosido una real Mei Tai, pero las dimensiones están ligeramente desviadas por lo que ha cortado otro patrón y ¡espera poder coser otro en breve!

En otras novedades de costura, Kate, también han comprado un dobladillo para su maquina. Desde entonces, ha cosido 5 fulares de lino, de las cuales 2 fueron para un amigo, de diversos tamaños.
